I am a poet who likes to take traditional stories and turn them on their ear, to use humor and wit to find a way towards a different truth.  I grew up in the Midwest, where my father read me poetry and fairy tales at bedtime.  I studied anthropology and have always held a fascination with folktales and mythology, which revealed to me the music and magic of language.  While not formally trained, I have honed my craft while working at a law firm for the last several decades, where I learned the nuance of language.  I often write about the quotidian to bring attention and celebrate parts of life we often do not take time to notice.  I want the reader to feel that poetry exists in even the smallest most ordinary parts of our days.  When someone tells me they hate poetry but they like my poems, I feel like I have opened a door for them to see poetry, and the world, differently.  I believe, as Russell Edson says, the poet is a secret agent in the world, always observing and writing, and, I would add, inviting others to join them.
